Kruger National Park Safaris

We primarily use Orpen Gate, approximately 45 minutes from Hoedspruit. Orpen offers quick access to the central grasslands and the renowned Timbavati/Satara region — known for having the highest lion densities in Kruger and excellent Big Five sightings. The drive from Hoedspruit to Orpen is scenic and shorter than other gates. For certain itineraries or multi-day safaris, we may also use Phalaborwa Gate (northern sector, best for elephants) depending on recent wildlife movements and your interests.

A guided safari with African Voyage Safaris gives you an experienced FGASA-registered guide who knows animal behaviour, uses radio networks for real-time sightings, positions the vehicle for the best views/photos, and handles all logistics (driving, gate formalities, timing). Self-drive is cheaper but you miss countless sightings because you don't know where or what to look for. Our guides spot animals you would drive straight past. The elevated open safari vehicle also offers far better viewing than a regular sedan. Most guests say a guided safari transforms their Kruger experience.

Kruger National Park and Hoedspruit are in a low-risk malaria area, especially during the dry winter months (May-September) when risk is minimal. However, malaria prophylaxis is recommended year-round as a precaution. We advise you to consult your doctor or travel clinic 4-6 weeks before travel for personalised advice. Additional protection: use DEET-based insect repellent, wear long sleeves and trousers at dawn and dusk, and sleep under mosquito nets where provided. Most safari vehicles are open-sided so insect repellent is essential regardless of the season.

We use specially modified open-sided safari vehicles with elevated seating, canvas roofs for shade, and unobstructed 360-degree views — ideal for photography and wildlife viewing. The open design means you can see, hear and smell the bush, creating a far more immersive experience than a closed vehicle. For transfers to and from your lodge and on public roads between Hoedspruit and Kruger, we use comfortable air-conditioned vehicles. In cold weather (May-August mornings), we recommend layers and we can provide blankets.
